ORYSO Concerto Competition

Eligibility: Musicians currently in grades 8 to 12 may audition on any instrument. Formal dress is not required for the audition/competition.
Repertoire: The concerto (one movement only) or solo work (for soloist and orchestra) must be in public domain* or available for purchase.
Awards: The Concerto Competition Winner will be recognized in local newspapers, on the ORCMA website, and will play with ORYSO at the Spring Masterworks Concert on Sunday, May 6, 2012.

ORYSO begins its fourth season in 2012 with its first rehearsal Sunday, Jan. 15, at the Grove Theater, High Places Church, 123 Randolph Rd.
The May 6 spring concert of the Oak Ridge Youth Symphony Orchestra will feature "L'Estate" (Summer section of Vivaldi's Four Seasons) and a work performed by the winner of the ORYSO Annual Concerto Competition and ORYSO.
The concerto competition will be held Saturday, Feb. 11, from 1 to 5 p.m. at Oak Ridge High School.

Summer Music for Youth
OAK RIDGE SUMMER CONSERVATORY, AUGUST 6-11, 2012 (tentative dates), GROVE THEATER, HIGH PLACES CHURCH, 123 RANDOLPH RD.
In 2012 the fourth annual Oak Ridge Summer Conservatory will be held for young musicians (7th to 12th grades) interested in participating in one of three programs: the Advanced Chamber Music program, which includes private lessons, chamber ensembles, string orchestra, classes, solo opportunities, student performances, faculty/guest artist recitals, and master classes; the Junior Orchestra program, which offers private lessons, string orchestra, classes, solo opportunities, student performances, faculty/guest artist recitals, and master classes; and the Piano Institute, which provides daily master classes, technique classes, piano ensemble/chamber music, student performances, and faculty/guest artist recitals.
The conservatory’s daily Evening Events are presented free to the general public at 7 p.m. in the Grove Theater. These include faculty recitals, guest artist recitals, the Student Showcase concert, the Conservatory Chamber Music concert, the Large Ensembles concert, and a fun event such as movie night. The Oak Ridge Summer Conservatory strives to hire a faculty of excellent musicians but keep tuition for each student as low as possible. Additionally, any student who is in financial need will be offered significantly reduced or free tuition.
Rachel Grubb, ORSC artistic director, former ORYSO conductor, and music student at Northwestern University, will provide one-week programs for young musicians learning to perform on wind, brass, string, and percussion instruments, as well as piano. You can reach Rachel on e-mail at

ORYSO and the new Kids with Strings Attached group will perform two concerts during the 2011-2012 season. The first concert will be on Sunday, December 4, at 5 p.m. at the historic Grove Theater, 123 Randolph Rd. Preston Davis is the conductor of both musical groups. The theme of the concert will be a Spanish Festival. ORYSO will perform George Bizet's Carmen suites.
The third annual Oak Ridge Summer Music Conservatory was held July 11-17, 2011, at the historic Grove Theater.
Rachel Grubb, conservatory artistic director, former ORYSO conductor, and music major at Northwestern University, provided one-week programs for teaching students how to perform on string, wind, brass, and percussion instruments, as well as piano.

Weekly Practice Schedule
All practice sessions will be held on Sunday at the Grove Theater, 123 Randolph Rd., in Oak Ridge
Junior Orchestra members will begin practice at 1 p.m. every Sunday through the date of the concert.
Youth Symphony will begin practicing at 3:15 p.m. every Sunday through the date of the concert.
