Gabriela Lena Frank (b. 1972) Pachamama Meets an Ode (2020)

Gabriela Lena Frank, an acclaimed contemporary composer, premiered "Pachamama Meets an Ode" in 2020. This innovative piece draws inspiration from two distinct sources: the Andean concept of Pachamama, the earth goddess revered in indigenous South American cultures, and Beethoven’s iconic "Ode to Joy" from his Ninth Symphony. Frank masterfully weaves these influences together, creating a work that celebrates the interconnectedness of nature and humanity. The composition employs a rich tapestry of orchestral colors and textures, incorporating indigenous musical elements and instruments alongside traditional Western orchestration. "Pachamama Meets an Ode" is a vibrant and thought-provoking piece that invites listeners to reflect on themes of unity and environmental stewardship.

Intermission

Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) Symphony No.9, Op.125, D minor (Choral) (1822-1824)

Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No.9 in D minor, Op.125, commonly known as the "Choral" Symphony, is one of the most celebrated and influential works in the classical repertoire. Composed between 1822 and 1824, this symphony is notable for its inclusion of a full chorus and vocal soloists in the final movement, setting Friedrich Schiller’s "Ode to Joy" to music. The Ninth Symphony is a monumental work that embodies Beethoven's ideals of freedom, unity, and brotherhood. The first three movements build a dramatic and emotional journey, culminating in the triumphant and transcendent finale. The choral movement’s powerful message of universal harmony and joy has resonated with audiences for generations, making the Ninth Symphony a timeless masterpiece and a symbol of hope and humanity.
