Sarah Hurd
Violin
Sarah Hurd has had a varied career as a violinist and violist in both the classical and pop music worlds, spanning nearly three decades and ranging from grand concert halls to small dive bars. She studied violin performance at Vanderbilt University (Blair School of Music), the North Carolina School of the Arts, and the University of Tennessee. Sarah currently performs with a number of orchestras in both Tennessee and the Carolinas, including Symphony of the Mountains, Brevard Philharmonic, Hendersonville Symphony Orchestra, and the Spartanburg Philharmonic, and is a former member of the Asheville Symphony.
Sarah was also a founding member and violinist/vocalist/percussionist/flautist with the Knoxville-based orchestral electro-pop band Shortwave Society, with whom she recorded two full-length albums and an EP, toured the eastern seaboard at length, and performed at many festivals including South by Southwest, the CMJ Music Marathon in New York City, Big Ears, and the Sled Island Music Festival in Canada. She also appeared on the final two albums by legendary Asheville-based band stephaniesid, with whom she also occasionally toured and played festivals, including ArtsMarket in Durham, and was a special guest for their final show at Diana Wortham Theatre in May 2016. When not on the road, she makes her home these days in Johnson City with her two obnoxious cats.
